Start where you actually are

You shouldn’t have to explain your relationship before you can work on it.

A lot of couples counselling was built around a man and a woman. You notice it in the forms, the examples, the guesses about who does what. Even a kind therapist can spend the first three sessions catching up.

Here you start where you are. Two women, two men, a couple where one or both of you is trans or nonbinary, a couple whose words for themselves have changed over the years. You don’t need a neat label to belong in this room, and nobody will ask you to justify yours.

What couples bring

Most of it is what every couple brings. Some of it isn’t.

The miss

The same fight, again

A pattern you both know by heart. One of you reaches, the other goes quiet, and nobody feels heard. We call that the miss, and it’s workable.

Pressure from outside that lands between you

Family who still won’t say your partner’s name. One of you out at work and the other not. Stress that starts outside the relationship has a way of ending up inside it.

No script for who does what

Without a default to fall back on, you get to design a life together. That’s a strength, and it can also mean the same talks about money, housework and time come round again and again.

Desire that has drifted

Wanting different amounts, wanting different things, or not really talking about sex at all. We can talk about it plainly here.

Big decisions

Moving in, marriage, children, fertility, opening up, or not. Choices that go better when you make them together than when you argue about them.

Trust that has been broken

An affair, a secret, a promise that didn’t hold. Repair is possible, and it doesn’t start with deciding who’s to blame.

How the work goes

The relationship is the client.

Not one of you, and not one side. I won’t take sides, keep score or decide who’s right. We work out the pattern you keep landing in, and build the moves that get you out of it.

01

Pull up a chair

A first session of 90 minutes, so there’s time for your history together, what’s working, and what keeps going wrong.

02

Find the miss

We slow down the moment where one of you reaches and it doesn’t land, until you can both see it coming.

03

Reach again

You practise the few moves that change the ending, in the room and then at home, so the next hard talk goes differently.

Honest answers

The questions couples ask first.

Is this only for two women or two men?
No. This page is for those couples, and Queer Love Lounge works with LGBTQIA+ couples and relationships of every structure, including trans and nonbinary partners and relationships with more than two people.
Do we both need to be out?
No. Plenty of couples are out to different people, at different times. That can be part of what we work on, at a pace that keeps you both safe.
Can we claim couples counselling on Medicare?
No. Relationship therapy isn’t rebatable under Medicare. A first session is 90 minutes for $240, and ongoing sessions are 75 minutes for $190.
How do we start?
